The beginning of interstellar civilization in the Local Cluster would forever be known as Luyin Arrival or, for those less willing to credit the aliens, Year 0. It was in this year that dozens of refugee ships from the strange Luyin species arrived in the region. These strange aliens lacked the resources and population to colonize new worlds, and instead begged refuge from the local civilizations of the cluster. In exchange, they offered Interstellar Technology. The lucky host systems that granted the Luyin refuge, or captured them for interrogation, were catapulted into the space age as they reverse-engineered the Luyin's technology: FTL drives, advanced Fusion reactors, rare materials capable of withstanding space travel and a common Luyin language that would become the trade dialect of the entire cluster.
But the Luyin did not just bring their technology with them: they also brought stories of their origin and the reason for their strange arrival. Their civilization had existed in the neighboring stellar cluster, years away even by FTL. They had been invaded and nearly annihilated by a hostile alien species that had arrived, quite unexpectedly, from even further away. Who these aliens were, what they wanted, or even if they truly existed, the Luyin could not say.
The race was now on. With over a dozen civilizations achieving interstellar travel nearly simultaneously the resources of the cluster were up for grabs. It would be a contest to see who could colonize new worlds the fastest, and then hold them. Victory could see the rise of a new interstellar empire. Defeat could mean being relegated to being a minor species trapped in their own system.
- All Factions acquire FTL at roughly the same time and are at roughly equal technology level
- All Factions have access to the Luyin "trade" language, which can be used for communication
- All Factions are aware of each other's existence and have exchanged cursory diplomatic envoys, but are unaware of their detailed culture and capabilities.
- All Factions are aware of all discovered systems
- The setting's technology level is early Science Fiction. Advanced tech such as gene modding, advanced materials and superstructures exist, but interstellar travel is still in its infancy.
